Beeting a Dead Horse

What does this senseless and unfair weather event have to do with the first local asparagus shipment? Ugh. Let's hope nothing at all.

Meanwhile, we'll take a step back in time. How about last Saturday? Wasn't it nice?

Yes, I was driving, but I was stopped in traffic. No, I don't live on a farm, we were just driving by one returning from the Tulip Festival.

I know I'm not the only one who has been twiddling my thumbs lately. I've seen an influx of beet based recipes over the past few days. Many food bloggers, present company included, are so desperate for a bit of color in this grey season we resort to blogging about beets. A number of the beets posts have started off the same way: "I've never really liked beets, BUT..."

At least I finally came up with a nice beet pun for the title.

For the record, there will not be ANY mention of beets in July. I swear.

Don't Beet a Hater

Beet Hater's Salad, a link to the San Francisco chronicle recipe just posted last week. I could possibly enjoy this. I could get back on the saddle and try beets again.

What a coincidence I found this right after this morning's beet post.

And yes, I know the title of this post was a real stretch.

A Confession

Root Veggie Fries

Last week I posted a method for baking root veggie fries with rutabegas, turnips and beets. I loved the idea, in theory at least. They're so colorful, and so healthy! But here's my confession. As I feared, they are not a french fry substitute. I ate a few, they weren't that bad, and then I stuck them in the fridge for "later". We're still waiting for "later". The turnips and rutabegas were OK, but the beets...

Now I'm not telling you this because I don't want you to make them. I do, actually, because you might like them, lots of people do. The moral of the story is that I took a chance, made something new with produce, and even though I won't be making them again any time soon, I've got no regrets. A $2 cooking experiment is always a win-win situation. That's a great benefit of buying fresh produce. It's cheap.

I'd also bet money that my kids would eat them. They eat anything if covered in ketchup. Maybe if I throw in some sweet potatoes and omit the beets, we'll have a winner.
